WHEREAS, the future of our city depends on its children receiving a high quality education; and
WHEREAS, 47,808 students are served by the Seattle Public School district; and
WHEREAS, the 2010-2011 School District Score Card for Seattle Public Schools reports that 71% of its students graduated on time from high school, yet only 61% of these graduates were prepared for admission to a four year college; and
WHEREAS, Seattle voters generously approved Families and Education Levies to support and improve student academic achievement in 1990, 1997, 2004, and again in 2011; and
WHEREAS, the goals for the upcoming 2012-2018 Families and Education Levy are to: 1) promote school readiness and learning, 2) support academic achievement and reduce the academic achievement gap, and 3) prepare graduates for college and the career of
their choice; and
WHEREAS, the Families and Education Levy Oversight Committee was established to make recommendations on the design and funding of Levy programs and to monitor the progress of Levy programs in meeting Levy outcomes and goals; and
WHEREAS, Seattle students have an interest in the success of the Levy in improving student performance and the perspective of Seattle's youth will help inform policy decisions related to its implementation and management; and
WHEREAS, the Seattle Youth Commission was created to advise and make recommendations to the Mayor and City Council on policies of importance to the City; and
WHEREAS, members of the Youth Commission represent a wide range of opinions and backgrounds, and come from neighborhoods throughout the city; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE, THE MAYOR CONCURRING, THAT
Section 1. The Seattle Youth Commission shall appoint two of its members to serve as advisors to the Families and Education Oversight Committee.
Section 2. The Seattle Youth Commission advisors to the Families and Education Levy Oversight Committee shall be members of the Youth Commission's Education Committee.
Section 3. The terms of appointment of the Seattle Youth Commission members to be advisors to the Families and Education Levy Oversight Committee shall be one year, from June 1 to May 31.
