AN ORDINANCE relating to the Department of Parks and Recreation; authorizing the acceptance of revenues from vendor fees, merchandise and food sales generated from the Seattle Aquarium's Sixth Annual Salmon Homecoming Celebration, and other donations
and contributions made in support of this event, increasing the expenditure allowances in the department's 1998 budget, and making a reimbursable appropriation from the Park and Recreation Fund therefor, all by a three-fourths vote of the City
Council.
WHEREAS, the Seattle Aquarium of the Department of Parks and Recreation has been hosting the annual Salmon Homecoming Celebration at Piers 62 and 63 in the last five years; and
WHEREAS, the Salmon Homecoming Celebration, honoring the great impact and influence of salmon on the Pacific Northwest, has been very successful during this period, attended by an average of 30,000 people over the three-day event; and
WHEREAS, the celebration offers the public an informative forum on salmon education and conservation, Native American Cultural exchanges, arts and crafts, and a variety of food; and
WHEREAS, the celebration substantially covers its expenses for the three-day event via revenues from vendor fees, and a combination of public and private resources, including King County, Seattle Public Utilities, and the Seattle Aquarium Society;
and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF SEATTLE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. As requested by the Mayor and Superintendent of the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation, the Superintendent is authorized to collect revenues from fees, merchandise and food sales, grants and private sponsorships for the Seattle
Aquarium's Sixth Annual Salmon Homecoming Celebration (September 11 to September 13, 1998). These revenues shall be deposited into the Park and Recreation Fund as reimbursement for the appropriation described below.
Expected revenues are:
Grants and sponsorships: $143,500 Fees, merchandise & food sales: 63,000 Total $206,500
Section 2. To provide for the payment of expenses related to the Salmon Homecoming Celebration, the expenditure allowances for The Seattle Aquarium (K1300) in the 1998 Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation budget is increased as follows:
Other Services and Charges 74000 $206,500
For such purposes, the sum of Two Hundred Six Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($206,500) is hereby appropriated from the Park and Recreation Fund.
Section 3. Any act consistent with the authority and prior to the effective date of this ordinance is hereby ratified and confirmed.
Section 4. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force thirty (30) days from and after its approval by the Mayor, but if not approved and returned by the Mayor within ten (10) days after presentation, it shall take effect as provided by Municipal
Code Section 1.04.020.
