AN ORDINANCE relating to City streets, renaming the segment of South Lander Street between 16th Avenue South and 17th Avenue South from South Lander Street to South Roberto Maestas Festival Street.
WHEREAS, Roberto Maestas was a leading advocate for social justice who dedicated his life to social justice and civil rights; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Maestas was born in Lourdes, New Mexico, came to Washington State as a migrant farm worker, and later became one of the first Chicano students to graduate from the University of Washington; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Maestas led community actions in the struggle for social, environmental and economic justice and was proudly arrested 13 times for just causes; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Maestas founded El Centro de la Raza and was executive director of the organization for 37 years; and
WHEREAS, El Centro de la Raza is a voice and a hub for the Latino community and provides an array of social, human, and educational services to people of all races and ethnicities; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Maestas will be remembered as a tireless, visionary and courageous leader who lived his convictions; and
WHEREAS, Roberto Maestas' work has made Seattle a better place for all; and
WHEREAS, the Beacon Hill community has expressed their support for the change; and
WHEREAS, the relevant public safety and public utilities agencies have reviewed the proposal and agree that no significant, negative impacts would result from this change; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF SEATTLE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The segment of South Lander Street between 16th Avenue South and 17th Avenue South is hereby changed from South Lander Street to South Roberto Maestas Festival Street.
Section 2. For the city's internal use in databases that limit the number of street name characters, the name may be abbreviated as South Roberto Maestas Fest. Street.
Section 3. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force 30 days after its approval by the Mayor, but if not approved and returned by the Mayor within ten days after presentation, it shall take effect as provided by Seattle Municipal Code Section
1.04.020.
