AN ORDINANCE relating to City streets, changing the name of a portion of Southwest Eddy Street between 31st Avenue Southwest and High Point Drive Southwest to Southwest Bataan Street, and superseding prior ordinances to the extent inconsistent.
WHEREAS, Ordinance 121404 approved and confirmed the plat of High Point Community and vacated portions of numerous streets, including Bataan Place, and established a new street grid with new street names; and
WHEREAS, World War II is generally considered to be the most destructive war in history involving struggles in Europe, Asia, and Africa; and
WHEREAS, World War II had many casualties and it is important to honor the history and battle experience of World War II veterans; and
WHEREAS, the City of Seattle has long recognized the importance of preserving our rich history which defines our local culture and identity for future generations; and
WHEREAS, the street Bataan Place was named in order to memorialize and honor the 10,000 American and Filipino soldiers who lost their lives in the Bataan death march during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Council Resolution 30337 honored the bravery and sacrifices of Filipino and American soldiers who fought during World War II under the American flag and under the direction and control of the United States pursuant to President Roosevelt's July
1941 Military Order; and
WHEREAS, the historical and cultural significance of the events in the Bataan peninsula during World War II should not be forgotten; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that the new street within the plat of High Point Community named Southwest Eddy Street is more appropriately named Southwest Bataan Street in order to recognize the sacrifice and lives lost in World War II; NOW,
THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF SEATTLE AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The name of a portion of Southwest Eddy Street between 31st Avenue Southwest and High Point Drive Southwest is hereby changed to Southwest Bataan Street.
Section 2. Ordinance 102981 and Ordinance 121404 are superseded to the extent inconsistent.
Section 3. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force thirty (30) days from and after its approval by the Mayor, but if not approved and returned by the Mayor within ten (10) days after presentation, it shall take effect as provided by Municipal
Code Section 1.04.020.
