A PROCLAMATION BY THE SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL HONORING
the ad hoc Committee to Establish a Seattle Disability Commission (CESDC), Julian Wheeler and commemorating November 12 as "Julian F. Wheeler and CESDC Day."
WHEREAS, In 2008, Julian F. Wheeler spearheaded the formation of the volunteer "ad hoc Committee to Establish a Seattle Disability Commission" (CESDC) with the assistance of Chris Leman and John Denooyer for the goal of advocating for a Seattle
Commission for People with disAbilities; and
WHEREAS, On July 24, 2009, as a primary vehicle for this advocacy, the CESDC submitted a Letter to the Mayor of Seattle requesting the creation of a Seattle Commission for People with disAbilities, authored by Julian F. Wheeler, and cosigned by
John Denooyer, Marybeth Lum, Christopher Leman, Doug Hildie, Charity Ranger, and Lucille Walls; and
WHEREAS, On November 12, 2009, following the sustained advocacy efforts in the form of appearances at Council Budget hearings and meeting with City Council, the CESDC was successful in securing funding for the formation and staff capacity to
manage the Seattle Commission for People with disAbilties; and
WHEREAS, The Seattle Commission for People with disAbilities advises the Mayor, City Council, and City departments about important issues for people with disabilities, recommend policies, practices, and legislation to the City in matters
affecting people with disabilities, and encourage understanding among people with various disabilities as well as between people with disabilities and the larger Seattle community; and
WHEREAS, There are over 70 Boards and Commissions in the City represented by over 900 constituents, many of which were the product of advocacy and campaigns aimed at the goal of bridging community voice in policies, programs, and issues; and
WHEREAS, The Seattle Commission for People with disAbilities, the legacy of the CESDC, continues its work to this day advancing social justice for people with disabilities and, thereby, for all people;
NOW, THEREFORE, THE SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL, PROCLAIMS NOVEMBER 12, 2019 THE
TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE APPROVAL OF FUNDING FOR A SEATTLE COMMISSION FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIESTO BE
JULIAN F. WHEELER AND CESDC DAY
FOR CONTRIBUTIONS OF MR. WHEELER AND THE CESDC TO THE CITY OF SEATTLE AND THE LEADERSHIP OF THE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES COMMISSION
